Customers in high-security or air-gapped networks where internet connection is not available may need to use FlexLM licenses — an on-premise server based solution.

The FlexLM licensing requires a virtual or physical license server. This can be any machine capable of running any version of Windows.
When a user opens an Ideate application, a license is checked out from a shared pool. When the application is closed, the license returns back to the server and it is available for another user. When using applications inside multiple Revit year versions at the same time, it is possible to consume multiple seats as a product inside each Revit year version will consume a separate license seat.
A couple of examples:
- Open a Revit model containing Ideate Sticky with Auto-Update ON in Revit 2026 and 2027 — this will consume two seats of Sticky out of the pool. Closing each model will return the licenses in turn.
- Launch an Automation scheduled task that uses Export hub to create a PDF — first an Automation license is consumed. When the Revit model opens and the export commences, a license for IdeateApps is checked out. When the export process completes, the IdeateApps license is returned to the pool. It could be checked out again if there is another Revit model to export. The Automation license will return when the scheduled task is completely done.
License borrow is supported.
You can use Ideate Software Installer to update everyone to the latest release and set the license at the same time or use the alternate method described here.
After each renewal, you will receive a new license file to replace the expiring one.
