  Starting Ideate SmartDelete

In this exercise we will use the Revit sample file named rac_basic_sample_project.rvt.

  1. Double-click on the Level 1 view in the Revit Project Browser to open the Level 1 plan view.
  2. Select the Basic Wall that is aligned with Grid Line A.
  3. Select the Ideate Software tab in the Revit Ribbon.
  4. Select the Ideate SmartDelete button on the IdeateApps panel.

NOTE:   You must select elements in Revit first before starting Ideate SmartDelete. 

TIP:  Ideate SmartDelete can also be added as a shortcut key.

  1. Close any open dialogs using the red X in the upper right-hand corner of the dialog.
  2. Verify that you are still in the Level 1 Floor Plan view.   If not, double-click on the Level 1 view in the Revit project browser.
  3. Zoom into the upper right corner of the floor plan showing the Mech, Bath, and Laundry rooms.
  4. Draw a selection box from upper left to lower right while holding down your mouse button and dragging around the 3 rooms as shown:

  1. Select the Ideate SmartDelete button on the IdeateApps panel. (Or, you can use a shortcut key if you have defined one for Ideate SmartDelete)
  2. Ideate SmartDelete will scan through the selected elements and expand the tree for the first element it finds with dependent elements. (Dependent elements are those elements that will ALSO be deleted with the elements selected for deletion.)
  3. BOLD Text means the element has dependents. Normal text means there are NO dependent elements.
  4. You should see there are 3 doors that have dependent elements that are shown to the right of the dialog.
  5. Select the PLUS symbol to the left of Walls to expand the list.
  6. Select on the first Basic Wall:Wall - Timber Clad in the list.
  7. The image on the right will match the wall selected.
  8. It will display that 1 door tag, 1 door, 1 wall opening, and 4 reference planes will ALSO be deleted should you choose to delete this wall.

  1. Select the box to the left of walls to uncheck the items for deletion. Your selected elements number should go from 25 to 18.

  1. Select the green Delete button in the lower-right of the Ideate SmartDelete dialog window.
  2. Review the Level 1 plan view to see the changes.

  1. Select the Ideate Software tab in the Revit ribbon.
  2. Select the Ideate QuickSelect button on the IdeateApps panel.
  3. Select the display option for the entire Revit project by choosing "Entire Project" from the drop down list.
  4. Ideate QuickSelect will show the number of instances of each category that are currently placed in the Revit project. This number appears in parenthesis to the right of each category listing in the results pane.

  1. Type the word "Foundation" into the Search field, and then select the binocular icon to the right of the Search field. (You can also select the Enter key after entering the word Foundation.)
  2. The results pane should update to show only those elements that contain the world "Foundation" in the Category, Family, or Type.
  3. The binocular icon will change to have a red X in the lower right-hand corner. This tells the user that the search field is being used. Later, you can clear the search by selecting on the binocular icon again, and the red X will disappear.

  1. Select on the PLUS symbol to the left of Levels to expand the tree.
  2. Select on the box to the left of Levels to select the 8mm Head:Foundation Level
  3. You have now selected the Foundation level.

  1. You can keep the Ideate QuickSelect dialog open or you can close it.
  2. Select the Ideate SmartDelete button on the IdeateApps panel. (Or, you can use a shortcut key if you have defined one for Ideate SmartDelete)
  3. You may think it's JUST the foundation level you are deleting, but look what will also be deleted!

  1. You can expand the Basic Wall by selecting on the PLUS symbol to the left.
  2. You can see the Basic Wall: Interior - Partition Instance by double-clicking on the item in the list. Ideate SmartDelete will show you the wall in the Revit view.

  1. Don't just delete elements without the full knowledge of what is going to be deleted! Use Ideate SmartDelete to fully understand what will be deleted!
