Create New Materials
Material data is complex with many different properties coming from a variety of sources. With Ideate BIMLink you are able to edit all of the primary metadata, such as Description, Keynote, and color and pattern values. Additionally you can assign values for the Appearance, Thermal, and Physical material assets. When the necessary assets are already defined within the RVT file, you can also use Ideate BIMLink to create new materials from an Excel file using the instructions below. This is a useful alternative to Transfer Project Standards because you can be more selective about the materials AND because this will not make duplicates.
Create an Excel File
- Open your Revit project or template file
- Launch Ideate BIMLink
- Select New…
- From the Browse tab, select the 09 Material Management folder
- Select the link definition called “Materials-Create_NEW” as shown below.
- Select Next> then select Done to complete the creation of the new link.
- From the main page in BIMLink, use the Export button to create a new Excel file from this link definition.

Modify the Data in Excel
- Open the Excel file created from the process above.
- Add a new row of data and type “NEW” in the Id column.
- Fill out the name and other values as appropriate. You can also copy paste results from another file.
- For the Appearance Asset, Physical Asset, and Thermal Asset, use the drop-down in Excel to ensure that a pre-loaded asset value is assigned.
NOTES:
- If the asset does not exist the material will be created with an unassigned asset value.
- For any existing materials in the list you can alter the properties, if so desired and these values will be modified when imported.

Import the Data to Create Specified Materials
- From the home page in Ideate BIMLink, select the Import… button.
- Select the modified Excel file.
- During import any changes will be identified. When “NEW” is specified but the Material name already exists, Ideate BIMLink will modify the existing material with the specified properties and NOT make a duplicate material.
This process can be applied to mutliple files via Ideate Automation. See related help topic: Batch Import Data From Excel to Revit
