Create New Line Styles

Line styles are used to indicate different effects, such as a dashed (------) line for reference planes. Line styles are used in many ways within the Revit project or template files including, but not limited to: lines, sketch lines, CAD Imports, views, groups, etc.

With Ideate BIMLink you are able to create new and edit existing Line Style properties, such as Line Weight, Line Color, and Line Pattern. This is a useful alternative to Transfer Project Standards because you can be more selective about the Line Styles AND because this will not make duplicates. Use a Revit file that as a starting point to create an Excel file that represents your desired standard. Then, use BIMLink to import that data into one or more Revit projects.

Create an Excel File as a Standard

Use a Revit file that has your corporate or project standards as a starting point to create an Excel file that represents your desired standard.

  1. Open your Revit project file (RVT).
  2. Launch Ideate BIMLink
  3. Select New…
  4. From the Browse tab, select the 04 Create Elements folder
  5. Select the link definition called 06 Line_Styles-Create_NEW.
  6. Select Next> then select Done to complete the creation of the new link.
  7. From the main page in BIMLink, use the Export button to create a new Excel file from this link definition.

Modify the Data in Excel

  1. Open the Excel file created from the process above.
  2. Modify the value in the Id column to “NEW”. This will allow the style to be created and/or modified. Related topic: NEW and Modify Functionality
  3. Modify any existing line style values as desired.
  4. To create new line styles, just type “NEW in the next available row.
  5. Fill out the new name and other values as appropriate.

NOTES:

Import the Data to Create Specified Line Styles

  1. From the home page in Ideate BIMLink, select the Import… button.
  2. Select the modified Excel file.
  3. During import any changes will be identified. When “NEW” is specified but the line style name already exists, Ideate BIMLink will modify the existing line style with the specified properties and NOT make a duplicate style.
