    Problem: You need to create several new parameters in multiple Revit family files (RFA). This process is very labor intensive and error prone.

    Solution: Since May 2023 Ideate BIMLink users have been able to define parameter requirements such as GUID, name, etc. as well as the parameter values, including formulas within Excel to easily create new parameters inside a single Revit family file (RFA). Now, when used in conjunction with Ideate Automation, customers can iterate that same set of functions across a folder or selection of RFA files to save even more time.

    Those who own or have a trial version of Ideate BIMLink and Ideate Automation can test-drive this workflow by following the instructions below.

    Prepare the Excel Content

    To import data from Excel we first need to have an Excel file that matches the tab name and the list of parameters as defined by a corresponding link definition from Ideate BIMLink. We recommend that you begin by using the default link definition called Parameters_RFA-Create_NEW. Detailed instructions are here: Create New Family Parameters

    Alternatively, you can use the sample provided with Ideate Automation, (C:\Program Files\Ideate\Ideate Automation\en-US\Samples\Ideate Software Scripts\07 Data Management\Ideate_Create_Parameters.xlsx) referring to the tab called Parameters_RFA-Create_NEW.

    If you need to add more parameters, update the link definition within BIMLink, then re-save the .link file with the changes to ensure they match the Excel file.

     

    Prepare the Revit Family File/Folder

    When altering Revit projects or families with Ideate Automation it is wise to create a backup. For this Revit family (RFA) exercise, make a copy of this folder (or similar) to your Desktop. We recommend a small sample size, so limit your example to a folder with 100 or less RFA files. Your sample can include subfolders.
    1.    Use Windows Explorer to copy a family folder with 1-100 RFA families to test to your desktop.
    2.    For example, we can copy the MEP>General Components folder to the Desktop. The RFA content in the subfolders shown below will also be modified in this example.

    Start the Task

    3.    From your Desktop or Windows search, launch Ideate Automation.
    4.    Select the Create option on the left to see the list of available scripts.
    5.    In the Library Folders under Ideate Software Scripts, select the 07 Data Management folder.
    6.    Pick IBL-Import_to_RFA in the Scripts list on the right, then select Next.

    Select the Sample Folder

    The script, as shown above, supports the selection of Revit Family Files or the selection of a folder. 
    1.    For this exercise, select the option:  [ ] Select a Folder
    2.    Next, for the Revit Family Folder option, select Browse and pick the folder on your Desktop per the earlier instructions.
    3.    Select Next
    4.    Review the Task details then select Run to update all the RFA files within the selected folder.

    Review the Results

    5.    The script, as shown above, supports the selection of Revit Family Files or the selection of a folder.
